Dr. John R "Ralph" Power, of Springdale was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Nashville (Howard County) to John and Minnie Shuffield Power. After graduating from Nashville High School, he attended Ouachita Baptist University. He graduated from Arkansas School of Medicine in 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korea War as a battalion surgeon with a MASH unit. During the summer of 1953, Dr. Power came to Springdale during a polio epidemic. He served as one of Springdale's three doctors while Dr. Ed Wheat and Dr. J.W. Dorman were hospitalized for polio. Afterward he became a partner of the Springdale Clinic along with Dr. C. Stanley Applegate and Dr. J.W. Dorman.

He served as chief of staff at Springdale Memorial Hospital in 1957, and again in 1966. He was a licensed physician for more than 50 years.

During his many years of practice in the Springdale community, he delivered more than 3,600 children, and made thousands of house calls and sustained a private family practice.

He was a member of the Washington County Medical Society, the Arkansas Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was appointed to the Springdale Civil Service Commission in September 1991, where he served as chairman. He was appointed to the Springdale Police Department Pension Fund Board in 1971. He served as medical director at three Springdale nursing homes. He was a former member of the Friendship Cemetery Association Board of Directors; was a former member of the Northwest Arkansas Mounted Patrol and made many rides with other area horsemen. He was very fond of elk hunting and would make yearly trips to the Colorado Rockies. He also made many horseback riding trips to the Canadian Rockies. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was an accomplished storyteller. He attended Christian Life Cathedral in Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Power, Wendell Power and Louis Power.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Stephens Power of the home, to whom he was married Oct. 18, 1983; four sons, Dr. Charles "Chuck" Power and wife Ann of Poulsbo, Wash., Ken Power and wife Denise of Lincoln, Bruce Power and wife Donna of Springdale and Ted Power of Springdale; one daughter, Kimberly Glenn and husband Steve of Fayetteville, and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale with the Rev. C.L. "Red" Dixon officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 610 E. Emma Ave., Springdale, 72764 and Christian Life Cathedral Building Fund, 1285 E. Millsap Road, Fayetteville, 72703.

Pallbearers will be Doug Fogley, Tommy Holland, Jim Cash, Winford Phillips, Keith Ferguson, Dr. Johnny Dorman and David McKinney.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene George, Don Moore, Charlie Farmer, Dr. Mike Rudko, George Biggs, David Wilkins and Wayne Blankenship.
