When Elijah Temple Pate was born on September 5, 1876, in Wayne, North Carolina, his father, William, was 30 and his mother, Smithey, was 28. He married Mary Helen Gilpin on April 19, 1905, in White, Arkansas. They had two children during their marriage. He died on August 31, 1919, in West Point, Arkansas, at the age of 42.
