When Mary Helen Gilpin was born on September 25, 1881, in Ouachita, Louisiana, her father, James, was 28, and her mother, Rachel, was 28. She married Elijah Temple Pate on April 19, 1905, in White, Arkansas. They had two children during their marriage. She died on October 29, 1948, in Searcy, Arkansas, at the age of 67.
