When (Viola) Ola Mae Dickens was born on December 6, 1901, in Faulkner Township, Arkansas, her father, Clemuel, was 32, and her mother, Mary, was 15. She married Jasper Calvin Shelton on November 18, 1923. They had one child during their marriage. She died on April 26, 1970, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 68, and was buried in Mayflower, Arkansas.
