Owen
1819 - 1893
Jane
1821 - 1899
When Owen West was born in 1819 in Bladen, North Carolina, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 23. He married Jane McClure on October 12, 1841, in Gibson, Tennessee. They had 14 children in 17 years. He died in 1893 in Conway, Arkansas, at the age of 74, and was buried in Oppelo, Arkansas.
1853 - Owen and Jennie moved to the Dardanelle bottoms along the Arkansas River in the area around Centerville, Yell Co., AR.
1856 - They moved to Petit Jean Mtn. (Eva Jones wrote)--At that time, there were only two other families living there, the John Huggins and Jim Webber families. There was a cabin on the mountain so the West family lived in this cabin for quite some time. I am not sure how long, but the cabin didn't have a floor, so he put the floor in it, and I think they must have lived in it 10 or 15 years. Later when they moved from the cabin, they lived in a house they built on a tract of land. In those days, land was claimed by what was known as Squatters Rights. Owen did not file on any of the land, but two of his sons did.
(The cabin has been moved and is now knows as "The Pioneer Cabin" in Petit Jean State Park.)
