When Orval Bradley Courtney and his twin brother George Millard (1903–1972) were born on May 27, 1903, in Conway, Arkansas, their father, James, was 41 and their mother, Sallie, was 35. He had four brothers and three sisters. He died on June 24, 1967, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 64.
