James Millard Courtney was born on January 7, 1862, in Wrightsville, Arkansas, the child of William Carver and Sarah Ann. He had five sons and three daughters with Sallie Horton. He died on April 24, 1918, in Faulkner County, Arkansas, at the age of 56.
