Charles Maitland Boyd, age 87, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Parkwest Medical Center, in Knoxville, Tenn.

Charles was born Oct. 16, 1926 in Conway, Ark. He graduated from Conway High School two years early and attended Hendrix College in Conway for the next two years. Charles postponed his studies to serve in the Army Air Corps, and then returned to graduate from Hendrix College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

After college graduation, Charles married Martha Virginia Menard and moved to Stillwater, Okla., where he worked as a teaching assistant while earning his master’s degree in Chemistry at Oklahoma State University. Their first child, Charlie, was born there in 1948.

In 1950, the family moved to Oak Ridge where Charles worked as a chemist in the field of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for about two decades at the X-10 facility of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They spent their first 10 years in Oak Ridge living in an “E” apartment across the street from Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, where Charles has been a member for over 60 years.

After their second child, Larry, was born in 1958, they built their “forever” home in Emory Valley just in time to welcome their third child, Becky, in 1961.

Charles was interested in electronics and spent many hours building and repairing equipment, either for the challenge or to help a friend with a broken item. He also loved the outdoors and exploration. He took his family on car trips all over the region to camp, hike and explore local caves. Even in his retirement years, he and Martha took ambitious trips to scenic natural areas all over the Southeast and made two trips to the Rocky Mountains to camp and hike in the wilderness. He and Martha took thousands of nature photographs, a hobby that Charles continued into his last years. Once his health began to decline, he still enjoyed going for car rides to natural areas, where he could enjoy a picnic including a short hike to enjoy and photograph the stunning East Tennessee views.

Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Menard Boyd (2006); parents, Theodore and Edna Boyd, and sister, Laverne Boyd Slay.

He is survived by son, Charles of Berlin, Germany; son Larry and wife Beverly (Goins) and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Isabel of Knoxville; daughter Rebecca (Boyd) Zirkle and husband James Zirkle of Knoxville.

A Memorial Service will be held at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, 451 East Tennessee Ave., in Oak Ridge, on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. with Don Morris officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 3 p.m. before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 404 BNA Drive, Suite 102, Nashville TN 37217. Arrangements by Cremation Options, Inc. (865) 6WE-CARE (693-2273) www.cremationoptionsinc.com.
