George William Hammett of Brockwell, son of the late George L. and Mary Martin Hammett, was born July 2, 1921 in Wideman. He died May 22, 1996 in Batesville. He was 74.
Mr. Hammett was united in marriage to Lena Simmons on February 7, 1953 in Melbourne. He was an Army Veteran and a Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist member.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sisters, Rhudine McCurly, Armilda Skidmore and Virginia Roberts all of Oxford; four nephews, two nieces and two adopted grandchildren, Morgan and Dalton Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Services were held May 25, 1996 at the Crouch Chapel on Melbourne with Brother Price Lovelace and Brother Jesse McDaniel officiating.
Pallbearers were Harold Hammett, Charles Hammett, Paul Jones, Harold Hamley, Randy Carpenter and Harold Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers were Revel Simmons, Lowell Melton, J. B. McCurly and Pat Chadwick.
Interment was at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Oxford under the direction of Howard Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Lena Mae Simmons Hammett, daughter of the late Clarence Simmons and Minnie Soden Simmons, was born March 30, 1935 in Brockwell, Arkansas. She departed this life March 11, 2015 in Calico Rock, Arkansas a the age of 79 years, 11 months and 9 days. She was raised by Orville and Alpha Yancey Simmons. She was a lifelong resident of Izard County.
She was united in marriage to G. W. Hammett February 7, 1953.
She spent her life as a daughter, sister, wife, homemaker and friend. During her working years, she was employed by Baxter Lab. She excelled at being a care giver. She provided child care for numerous children in the area. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by Randy and Gina Carpenter of Brockwell and their children, whom she considered grandchildren: Damara Carpenter of Brockwell, Morgan Carpenter and her daughter: Lily Carpenter of Melbourne; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Roberts of Pineville and Audean Baker of Mountain Home; nephews: Charlie Hammett, Harry Hammett, Paul Jones, and Danny Jones all of Mountain Home, three nieces: Rachel Jones of Fayetteville, Norma Rice of Panama City, Florida, and Darlene Skidmore in Indianapolis, Indiana; one great niece: Nicole Skidmore of Wideman; twelve former babysitting children: Chase & Katie Orf, Bailey & Liam Baker, Alex & Preston Walker, Macey & Mason Cooper, Andrew Walker, Coty Marlin, Allison Hatman and Noah Stevenson; numerous cousins and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband G. W. Hammett in 1996; her Uncle Orville Simmons and Aunt Alpha Simmons and one infant sister.
Graveside funeral service will be Sunday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Brockwell with Eldon Hellums officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 15 from 1p.m. until the graveside service begins at 2:00 p.m.
