The Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, April 12, 1929:

A. F. Hammett Dies Following Illness

After a long siege of illness, Mr. Albert F. Hammett, well known citizen of this place, passed away at his home in the west part of town, at about 12:30 a.m., last Saturday morning, April 6th.

Mr. Hammett took sick about two months ago, suffering from a stomach trouble and though everything possible was done to relieve him, he continued to grow weaker from time to time, until it became apparent that he could not recover.

Mr. Hammett would have been 68 years of age next August 23rd. He was born in Alabama, but at the close of the Civil War he moved with his mother and younger brother to Tennessee, the husband and father having lost his life during the war. Three of four years later they moved from Tennessee to this section, where deceased spent the remainder of his life. In 1894 he was married to Miss Amanda Elliott, whose death occurred twenty-two years ago. One son was born to this union.

Mr. Hammett was engaged at farming nearly all his life and eighteen or twenty years ago he and his nephew, John Hammett, embarked in the ginning and mercantile business at Wideman, in connection with their farming operations. They sold their holdings at that place six years ago and moved to Calico Rock to engage in the ginning business.

Deceased enjoyed the highest esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He possessed a rare faculty for making friends. His frank and humorous manner of expressing himself; his fair and impartial view of all matters, all revealed the splendid character that was his. His mien and bearing, with a unique disposition for joviality, made friendships that he held tenaciously. His death is deeply deplored by the scores of friends who knew and loved him.

Besides one son, Geo. Hammett, of near here, deceased is survived by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hammett and their son, Ethel, with whom he has made his home for many years.

Burial took place in the Flat Rock cemetery, six miles east of here, Saturday afternoon, following the funeral services conducted at Flat Rock church by Rev. A. L. Platt, assisted by Rev. L. L. Langston. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended.
