Nell Jackson was victoriously and graciously called home to the Lord on Sunday, May 13, 2007. Mrs. Jackson, a Helena resident since 1948, leaves behind an adoring family and many wonderful friends. She was born September 10, 1925, in Lato, AL., to the late Charlie and Mary Martin Daye. She graduated as valedictorian from Smiths Station High School in Alabama and attended Deignan’s Business School at night while she worked during the day. She married the late Gordon Jackson in Alabama, and they moved to Helena where he began a long career at the Helena Cotton Oil Mill.

Mrs. Jackson was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Helena for many years and has served on numerous committees and performed in multiple roles. In addition to serving as the church secretary for 22 years, she also started a grief support group after the death of her husband. In addition, she was a board member of Mercy Ministries, an active member of both the Helena Regional Medical Center volunteers and of P.E.O. having served as an officer in both groups. No matter where she was serving, Mrs. Jackson touched lives through her Christ-like attitude.

As the matriarch of a large family, Mrs. Jackson had profound impact on not only her children and their spouses, but also on all of her grandchildren and their spouses, as well as her great-grandchildren. All of them consider her a special gift from God. She leaves behind a son, Charles, and his wife Linda, of Collierville, TN., and their children Sara and her husband Rob Wade of Atlanta, GA., Carly, of Memphis, and Matt, currently attending college at the University of Montana; a daughter, Nancy Plum and her husband Steve, along with their children Andrea and Kirk, of Keller, TX., and her other daughter, Carol Brown and her husband Tom of Houston, TX., along with their son Doug and his wife Stephanie, and their children Ali and Kiley, of Germantown, Wisconsin, and their other son Jeremy and his wife Carrie of Washington, D.C. She also leaves behind a sister, Muriel Johnson of Jacksonville, FL., and a brother Melvin Daye of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was predeceased by two other sisters and a brother. Further, at the death of Margarette Brown, Mrs. Jackson became the unofficial matriarch of the extended family of Kaye Brown Higgins and her family, Diane Brown Everhart and her family, and Nick Brown and his family.

Visitation will be held at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, from 5:30-8:00 p.m., and funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Helena. Mrs. Jackson’s grandsons, grandson-in-law, and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the First Baptist Church memorial fund.
