VANZANT, John H. - Sonora mourns the loss of one of her best citizens - her postmaster, good neighbor and kind friend. After several years of ill health, which about nine months ago developed into Brights disease, John H. Vanzant peacefully breathed his last at his late residence in Sonora Sept. 16, 1911, aged 46 years and 14 days. He was born near Yellville, Marion County Aug. 26, 1865 and at that place grew to manhood's estate after which time he came to Washington County and has since, for the most part of the time, been a resident of this vicinity. In 1894 he was united in marriage to Miss Ollie Stone. To this happy union were born four children, Maggie, Beulah, Lanore and Laverne. He was known thru out the whole country far and near and to know him was to honor and respect him for his many good traits of character. He was honest in his convictions, zealous in good works, an affectionate husband and father, a true Christian and an honored citizen. None have done more to advance the interests of our township in religion, morality and education than John H. Vanzant and we feel the loss a great one, not only to the family circle and relatives but to the community. For nearly fifteen years he was Sonora's postmaster, performing the duties of such to the entire satisfaction of its many patrons. Several years ago he professed religion and two years ago united with the M.E. Church, South when that denomination organized at this place. He was our Sunday School superintendent for many years and only gave up the work when compelled to do so by ill health. The funeral services were conducted by Elder Thurman at the family residence Sunday at 4 p.m. After the service the Masons took charge of the remains and performed their last sad rites for a departed brother. He was then conveyed to the Sonora cemetery followed by a concourse of sympathizing friends numbering nearly 300 and there laid to rest. To the widow and children, the brothers and sisters we extend our deepest sympathy. {The card of thanks was signed by Mrs. Ollie Vanzant and children, Sonora; Fred Vanzant, Sonora; William Vanzant, Sonora; Mrs. Mary Harp, Sonora; Mrs. Sarah Callahan, Ralph; Andrew Vanzant, Bellefonte; Mrs. Amy Honeycut, Bellefonte.}
