NELSON, Pearl - Garfield, Ark., May 25.- Our community was shocked last Thursday afternoon by the information that Mrs. Pearl Nelson had attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a preparation containing a large amount of carbolic acid. She lived through the night and died late Friday morning. She had been an invalid for several years and last summer underwent an operation which was undertaken for her relief and this winter her mental condition was such she had to be cared for at the hospital for nervous diseases at Little Rock. She was discharged this spring apparently much improved. For a few days previous to her death she had not been as well as usual. She had intimated her intention to end her life and on this account was closely watched by her husband and friends. She evaded their vigilance Thursday afternoon for a few minutes and went to the barn where she swallowed the decoction that caused her death. Her husband, Wm. Nelson, missing her after a few minutes absence, found her collapsed at the barn. Thinking she had been stricken with heart failure, he carried her to the house and put her on the bed. Drs. Hodges and Northcutt were summoned as soon as possible but there was no show to save her life. She was unconscious from the time she took the poison until death. Wm. Nelson, her husband, is a hard-working man who has lived near Garfield ever since his marriage and has been for years endeavoring to have his wife restored to health but excepting for an exceptional rally the disease continued its inroads. Mrs. Nelson was a woman of amiable character and a devoted member of the Christian church. Several children were left motherless, the oldest being a girl about 15. The bereaved family have the sympathy of our community.
