Accident at UA fatal to worker

A longtime employee of the University of Arkansas Athletic Department was killed Wednesday afternoon when he became trapped in an elevator shaft at Razorback Stadium.

Calvin "C.J." Priddy, 30, of Fayetteville was pronounced dead at the scene. While apparently trying to repair the elevator. Priddy had been trapped between the floor of the elevator car and the top of the doorway leading into the elevator, said UA Police Lt. Mike Terry.

Fayetteville Fire Chief Mickey Jackson said Priddy's body was not mangled and there was only "a little blood" at the scene. He said Priddy's body was found lying halfway inside the elevator and halfway outside the elevator shaft on the stadium's bottom level. Officials found Priddy in a "compressed" position, Jackson said.

Priddy, according to the UA directory, was the athletic equipment supervisor and had worked for the department for close to 10 years. His wife, Phyllis, is a custodial worker in the Athletic Department.

"C.J. was a member of the Razorback family, our family," said UA Athletic Director Frank Broyles. "His father worked for the Athletic Department, and C.J.'s wife works for the Athletic Department. This is tragic.

"I don't think anyone in the department was more loved than C.J. He had been around the Athletic Department since he was a boy when he would follow his dad around. We grieve for his family and will miss him very much."

Terry said a 911 call was made about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday from the UA campus and a UA police officer was on the scene within a minute.

Central Emergency Medical Service responded to the incident, and UA Police along with Fayetteville police officers directed traffic.

Representatives from an elevator company were on the scene, but Terry said no determination had been made about whether the elevator malfunctioned.

The investigation was continuing Wednesday evening and more information was expected to be released today.
