ELKINS — Jack Bruce Carter, 90, of Elkins died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at his home. He was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Durham, Ark., to Samuel Elmer and Dewey Anderson-Carter. He was a longtime Methodist and member of the Elkins Community Church.

He served as a Navy fighter pilot in WWII and was postmaster in Elkins for 37 years. Jack loved his family, his community and his country. He was an avid outdoorsman, a master hunter and fisherman, and renowned for his humorous stories. He was often observed tending to his garden, livestock and pets. Later in life, he would spend hours on the pond bank behind his house, contemplating nature.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James K. Carter and sister, Annabelle Carter.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Rada Mae Carter of the home; two sons, John Carter and wife, Linda, of Mooresville, N.C., and Jimmy Carter of Springdale; daughter, Jeanie Hammack and husband, Dave, of Elkins; three grandchildren, Jack Alan Sallee and Henry Sallee, both of Elkins, and Sam Sallee of Allen, Texas; two sisters, Patsy Banks and husband, Jeff, of Springdale, and Bettie Miller and husband, Jim, of Fayetteville; and many other beloved family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Beard's Funeral Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at the Elkins Community Church with the Rev. Charles Ashcraft officiating. Burial will be at McCord Cemetery in Elkins.
