Just after we went to press last week we received the sad intelligence of the death of Uncle John C. McClelland. He died of pneumonia on Thursday after a brief illness. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday by Rev. B.H. Greathouse, after which his body was taken in charge by the masons and laid to rest according to the custom of that order. The Fayetteville correspondent of the Little Rock Democrat pays this just tribute to his memory. He was a brick mason by trade, came here from Tennessee soon after the close of the war and by his upright life and gentlemanly deportment made all good people his friends. He was a zealous Mason and Christian, was tyler of the Washington Lodge and sexton of the Methodist church, and was ever found at the post of duty. During last week and the week before while the Conference was in session here he was untiring in his efforts to make every one pleasant and feel at home, and no doubt exposure and loss of rest during that conference brought on pneumonia. There will be many who have known him in the capacity of sexton or tyler who, with myself and his numerous friends here will feel sad to know that the faithful old watchman has fallen to sleep upon his post. While we feel sorry, indeed, to lose our faithful old friend and brother we feel well assured that our loss is his great gain.
