James Curtis Mayfield, 73, of Caledonia, well known Union County merchant and planter died unexpectedly in a local hospital Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. Death was attributed to a heart attack. In addition to his other activities, Mr. Mayfield owned what is believed to be the last cotton gin in operation in Union County, serving not only this county but two North Louisiana parishes. Although not an office-holder, he played a leading role in the politics of his community. He was born in Caledonia Oct. 30, 1892, the son of Samuel and Sarah Ford Mayfield. He spent his life in the locality and was a member of Caledonia Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Evelyn Ford Mayfield; a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Barnes; a stepson, Harold Otwell; a sister, Mrs. B. N. Spears; and four grandchildren, all of Junction City. Funeral services have been announced for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Caledonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles T. Talley, the Rev. Hugh Nelson and the Rev. Louis L. Wilkins officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery under the direction of Pratt Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Ralph Hall, Earl Hall, Johnny Telford, J. B. Enis, Lavelle Perdue, D. D. Powell, Joe Peace and Shelby Lewis. The body was taken to the Mayfield home in Caledonia, Wednesday morning. (El Dorado Times - February 23, 1966)
