KING, Helen LEWIS - Mrs. Helen Lewis King, wife of H.Y. King of the Bentonville Ice & Cold Storage Company, died at her home in Bentonville on Friday, August 5th, 1927 at 11:30 o'clock a.m. at the age of fifty-two years, nine months and fifteen days. She was ill only a short time before her death and while her condition was known to be serious her death was a great shock to her family and friends. Mrs. King was born in Helena, Ark. on November 20, 1874, the daughter of Stephen D. and Helen Johnson Lewis. Her mother died when she was an infant and she was sent to the home of her grandmother Lewis in Paris, Ky. where she remained until she was nine years old, then returning to Helena where she was placed in a convent and remained there until she was thirteen years of age. After leaving the convent she joined the First Baptist Church in Helena at the age of fourteen and later went to live with her uncle in Brooklyn, N.Y. and completed her musical education in New York City. Her uncle with whom she lived in Brooklyn was a wealthy man and having no children he offered to make her his sole heir if she would make her home with him. Leaving her uncle's home she went to Washington, D.C. and lived a short time with her cousin, Tom L. Johnson, who was at that time a member of Congress from Ohio. After visiting for a time in Washington she returned to Rogers, Ark. to which place her father had moved and on her eighteenth birthday, November 20th, 1892 was married to H.Y. King of Rogers and lived there nineteen years, during which time one son and six daughters were born. Mr. and Mrs. King and family have lived in Bentonville sixteen years where Mr. King has operated the Bentonville Ice & Cold Storage plant. Funeral services were held at the family residence on East Fourteenth Street at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon in the presence of a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives, the services being conducted by the Rev. M.L. Voyles of Little Rock, former pastor of the Bentonville Baptist Church, of which organization Mrs. King had been a devout member for many years. Mrs. King is survived by her husband, H.Y. King; Mrs. E.G. Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Mrs. Gordon Knott and Misses Katherine and Blanche King of Bentonville, all of whom were present at the funeral.

Mrs. Helen L. King, wife of H.Y. King, died at the family home in this city Friday, August 5, 1927 following an illness of but two days. She was 52 years of age. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon in the presence of a large number of old friends of many years standing. Many and beautiful were the floral offerings. The services were conducted by Rev. M.L. Voyles of Little Rock, her former pastor and life long friend of the King family, assisted by Rev. J.D. Allen of the Baptist church and Rev. A.W. Henderson of the Presbyterian church. Following the services the body was placed in the mausoleum in the City Cemetery. Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Stephen L. King and five daughters: Mrs. Gordon Knott, and Misses Blanche and Katherine King of the home, Mrs. Mary Taylor of Ft. Oswego, N.Y. and Mrs. Helen Williams of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Mrs. Helen Lewis King was born in Helena, Ark. November 20, 1871. Her parents moved to Rogers in 1891. The following year she was married to H.Y. King in that city who conducted a cold storage plant there. They lived in Rogers for 19 years. They moved to Bentonville 16 years ago. Mrs. King was prominent in social and church activities and a member of the Baptist church of many years standing. She was a niece of Tom L. Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the ten leading Democrats, of whom William Jennings Bryan once named as big enough to place in nomination for president.

Mrs. H.Y. King died last Friday at her home in Bentonville after an illness of but a few days, the result of uremic poisoning. Her maiden name was Helen Lewis and she was born near Helena, Ark., 52 years ago. Mrs. King was a resident of Rogers for many years, Mr. King owning and operating the first cold storage plant here, the first electric light plant, also the first bottling plant. Sixteen years ago the family moved from Rogers to Bentonville where they have since resided. She is survived by her husband and six children: one son, Stephen L. King and five daughters, Mrs. Alfred Taylor of Oswego, N.Y.; Mrs. E.G. Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Mrs. Gordon Knott and Misses Katherine and Blanche King of Bentonville. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Bentonville Monday afternoon at 2:30 and were attended by a number of Rogers friends. Mrs. King was an active worker in the Baptist churches, both in Rogers and Bentonville, and her death is mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
