Emma Mae Sample Martin, age 96, of Wilburn (Hiram Community) went to be with the Lord November 18, 2007. She was born September 25, 1911, at Clay, Arkansas, in White County to Charles and Hester (Gay) Sample. She lived 96 years, 1 month, and 24 days.
In her first marriage to Leo Martin, they had seven children: Boyd Dwain Martin, Sr., Norma Lea Sparkman, Norman (Sonny) Martin, Earlene Johnson, Louise Toy, Lanelle Martin, and Carolyn Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, second husband Oren Martin of 53 years; seven brothers; two sisters; two sons, Boyd Dwain Martin, Jr. and Norman (Sonny) Martin; one daughter Lanelle Martin; one son-in-law, George Sparkman; two grandsons, Wilfred Leo Martin and Larry Glenn Martin; and one great, great granddaughter Payton Sparkman.
She is survived by four daughters, Norma Lea Sparkman of Heber Springs, Earlene Johnson and husband Norman of Wilburn, Louise Toy and husband Floyd of Lubbock, Texas, and Carolyn Johnson and husband Sherriel of Pangburn; two daughters-in-law, Ruth McAdams and husband Ralph of Heber Springs and Joyce Martin of Wilburn; 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 10 great, great grandchildren, and a sister, Irene Whitener and husband Howard of Batesville.
She made her profession of faith in July 1926 and united with New Bethel Southern Baptist Church of Floral. She was active in the teaching and music ministries as long as she was able.
She moved to the Hiram community of Cleburne County in 1942 where she raised her family and earned the respect of the community. She raised an abundant garden, chickens and cattle to provide the needs of her family. She was always cooking, canning, sewing and doing endless tasks to be ever faithful in her calling as a mother, wife and neighbor as she perceived it from her relationship with God. She was a quiet person that could be called upon to lend a helping hand. She found time to teach the importance of family through activities. Some examples are big family dinners, a ballgame in the front yard, anti over, horseshoes, jacks, Chinese checkers, dominoes, William trimble toe, playing the guitar and singing, and reading.
As the Holy Spirit comforts those left behind, be assured that she is at rest with the Lord and those gone on before her.
