Born to A Q & Rosa Mae Reed-Stevens September 18, 1924 in Collin County, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2010. He was the youngest of five children – an older brother and three sisters – all of whom have gone to their Homecoming in years past. He married Bernice Babb and she preceded him in death on February 12, 1989. They were married for over 43 years but had no children.

Richard is survived by a few nephews: Waymon Stevens, John Campbell, David Trammell, and Mike Funderburgh; Nieces: Jacquita Stevens Adams, Agatha Stevens Wells, and Pat Funderburgh Smith; life-long friends, Edna and Grover Simmons, Grover is deceased, and Lynn and Sam Lewis.

Richard was raised to be an honest, hard working man during the Great Depression time. He joined the United States Navy when he was 17 years old and served in WWII. Richard had several jobs during his younger years: car-hopped at a local Dallas diner, and worked for Wonder Bread Bakery; a salesman in Oklahoma; a guide/hunter in Idaho, New Mexico and Arkansas, and a rancher/cattleman in Oklahoma. His favorite time was hunting and fishing in Arkansas and it will be his final resting place, as well.
One poignant image of Richard reveals his firm belief in God, and to make certain others were aware too. He mentioned that he’d not been a believer when he was younger, too stubborn to believe; but as he grew older and wiser, he realized that God was the only way to have a real life.
Richard Loyd Stevens is the last of a great generation of strong, determined, courageously loyal veterans who will be missed by all who knew him.
