Jackie Ussery, 59, of Russellville, crossed the finish line, following a hard fought battle with cancer, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home in Russellville.
He is survived by his three children, Sammy Ussery (Danielle), Russellville, Tammy Varner, Rogers, Tim Ussery (Jennifer), Seattle, WA; six grandchildren, Braden, Cort, Sophie and Bella Ussery, all of Russellville, Ally Varner, Rogers, Larkin Ussery, Seattle, WA; his mother, Mary Jo Ussery, Greenbrier; Brother, Joe Ussery (Carol), Greenbrier; nephew, Cody Ussery, Greenbrier; two nieces, Stacey Ussery and Shelley Barr, both of Greenbrier; Judy Swafford, Russellville.
The son of Jo Jo and Mary Jo Wyatt Ussery, he was born November 2, 1953 in Conway. He was a 1971 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and attended Central Baptist College on a basketball scholarship and received his bachelor of education from the University of Central Arkansas.
Jackie began his coaching career with Caddo Hills Public Schools in 1977, then Quitman and then Enola School districts. He moved to Russellville in 1984 to work as a lineman for Arkansas Power and Light (Entergy) and also worked several summers as a park ranger for the Arkansas Army Corps of Engineers. He restarted coaching at the Russellville School District in 1995 and retired in 2008 as Assistant Transportation Director for Russellville School District. He was a member of the Arkansas Activities Association, the NEA and the AEA
Jack was known for his friendly smile, funny stories and positive attitude. He lived every day to the fullest and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, who referred to him as “Pop”, “Ol’ Pa” and “Papa Jack”. As a coach, he was an encouragement to hundreds of students and impacted countless lives.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Russellville. He was preceded in death by his father, Jo Jo Ussery; grandparents, William Joseph Ussery and wife Viva Lee.
Funeral will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Humphrey Chapel. Dr. Stephen Davis will and Wesley White will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday, at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Faulkner County by Humphrey Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., on Tuesday, at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Bill Henderson, Steve Hawkins, Jerry Grinder, Cody Ussery, David Ussery and Josh Blackmon. Honorary pallbearers are Denny McCrotty, Matt Kordsmeier, Glen Kordsmeier, Joe Sitkowski, Jeff Holt, Jim Dickerson and Randy Willison.
