Bessie Elizabeth Gilbert Girtman, 84, a resident of Augusta, GA, for the past five and half years, and a former resident of Hamburg, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, in Augusta. She lived in the old Crossett Camp community. A homemaker, she served as a Sunday School teacher, deaconess, secretary for the mission, and was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in the Crossett Camp community until she moved to Augusta where she joined Whole Life Ministry. She enjoyed reading the Bible, listening to gospel music, shopping and eating.
She is survived by three sons, Cornelius Girtman, Jr., of Crossett, Dennis Girtman and wife Carolyn of El Dorado and Donald Girtman of Hamburg; four daughters, Francis Robinson of San Francisco, CA, Julia Merritt of Pine Bluff, Brenda Martin amd husband Ronald of Augusta, and Debra Sodie of Colony, TX, three brothers, Curtis Terry Gilbert and wife Sarah of Arkansas City, Laurel Dean Gilbert of Akron, OH, and Willie "Sonny Man" Shaw and wife Sallie of Carthage; five sisters, Jerlene Griffin and husband Warren of Crossett, Clara Mae Durley of Milwaukee, WI, Linda Mateen of Hollandale Beach, FL, Nancy Gilbert of Cleveland, OH, and Gerry Millings and husband Norman of Coply, OH, ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Girtman, in 1994; her parents, Hunter and Nettie Yarbrough Gilbert; a daughter, Annie Mae Cook; one brother, Hunter Fred Gilbert; and one sister, Tearse Collins.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in the old Crossett Camp community south of Hamburg with Revs. Gregory Taylor and Greg Baker officiating. Pallbearers were James Canady, Bruce Wright, Nathan Girtman, J.P. Wright, Joe Haynes, and Clarence Haynes. Burial was in the Nimmons Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
