Mrs. Virginia Brooks Holmes, age 87, died Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Healthcare-Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Batesville, MS. Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Augusta Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, AR with Dr. John McCallum, First Baptist Church, Hot Springs, AR officiating. Mrs. Holmes was born in Augusta, AR on August 22, 1925, to John William & Lottie Baker Brooks. She attended Arkansas State Teachers College and taught Home Economics for a short time at Laura Conner High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbus and a former member of First Baptist Church in Hot Springs, AR. Mrs. Holmes was very active in the Business & Professional Women’s Club while living in Hot Springs, AR on the local, district and state levels. She was instrumental in establishing the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and served on the Steering Commission to establish the Garland County Community College. She was also a member of Pilot, International and was an elected Justice of the Peace. Mrs. Holmes was also a fan of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and loved “calling the hogs.” She was the former owner of a flower shop in Augusta, and a gift shop, The Trend House in Hot Springs. She was also a licensed Funeral Director in AR. A resident of Columbus since 1971, she was the former owner of the Blossom Shop. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes celebrated 65 years of marriage in January of 2013. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Doris Brooks Hazelwood and Harry and her brother and sister-in-law, John W. Brooks, Jr. and Jenny. To cherish her memory she leaves her husband, Herbert Reed Holmes; her daughter, Beverly Holmes McIntyre (Floyd); her granddaughter, Margaret Virginia McIntyre; and her great- granddaughter, Ann Kinsley Cline, all of Columbus; sister-in-law, Marjorie H. Martin of Searcy, AR; one nephew and two nieces. Memorials may be made to the Lowndes County Humane Society, P.O. Box 85, Columbus, MS 39703 or the Annunciation Catholic Church, Organ Fund, 823 College St., Columbus, MS 39701.
