Two girls drown when SUV enters lake

MOUNTAINBURG — Two young girls drowned Saturday in Lake Shepherd Springs and their mother was hospitalized after the sport-utility vehicle she was driving backed into the lake, the Crawford County sheriff said.

Courtney Cater, 8, and her sister, Sarah Caler, 4, were taken to the lake by their parents, Marvin and Tonette Caler of the Greenwood area, according to Sheriff Bob Ross.

The lake is in the northeastern corner of Crawford County just east of U.S. 71.

Tonette Caler dropped off her husband to meet his brother and two other men to go fishing, Ross said, and then apparently was preparing to leave the area sometime before noon when the accident occurred.

The sheriff said Tonette Caler either backed the SUV into the water inadvertently, or it rolled backward into the lake. The time the vehicle went into the water is not known, Ross said, but a 911 call was placed to the Crawford County sheriff's office shortly before noon. The caller told the 911 operator that a woman was being pulled out of the lake.

Ross said a man fishing along the bank heard someone crying for help and saw a woman and a small child in the water. The man was able to swim to Tonette Caler and get her to shore, but he could not maintain his grip on the child, and she slipped into the murky water, Ross said.

The fisherman, with help from a man who was kayaking nearby tried to find the child but could not, the sheriff said.

Tonette Caler was taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Van Buren and later transferred to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, where she was reported in critical condition Saturday evening.

Ross said that, when Marvin Caler returned from fishing, he found the Crawford County Dive Team searching for his daughters.
