Sarah June Daugherty Peeples, 91, received her kiss into heaven (her words!) at her home in Hardy, AR on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, after suffering with Parkinson's Disease for several years.

She was born in Hardy, Arkansas, to Mattie Emily Clayton and Hubert Cave Daugherty on January 12, 1921.

After graduating from Hardy High School with the Class of 1938, she majored in English and minored in French at Arkansas State University.

Sarah June was a member and President of Alpha Tau Zeta sorority, was a competitive swimmer, diver and tennis player, and was elected 1942 ASU Beauty.

Sarah June worked for the United States Department of Interior In Washington, D.C., prior to her marriage to John Dorsey Peeples, Jr., M.D., who predeceased her.

She remained an avid tennis player into her 70s and swam into her 80s. Until three years ago, she stayed fit by walking up and down the hills and around Loberg Park in Hardy.

Consistent with her upbringing in a union church with a weekly rotation of denominational ministers, she was at home in a variety of Protestant denominations and sequentially a member of Hardy Methodist, First Evangelical, Bellevue Baptist, and West Memphis Presbyterian. She eagerly participated in the Episcopal and Eastern Orthodox traditions adopted by her adult children.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty Jo Halbach of Memphis, TN, and Dorothy Marie Mas of Hardy, AR, a daughter, Sarah Hodges (Mickey); three sons, John Peeples, III (Susan), and Clayton Peeples (Ebet) all of Memphis, TN, and the Rev. David Peeples (Margaret) of Montgomery, AL; and 10 grandchildren, Chris, Irene, Ben and Joe Hodges, Marie Peeples, Ella and Jack Peeples, all of Memphis and Anna, Cate, and Will Peeples of Montgomery.

The family wishes to thank Trinity Hospice of Memphis and Caring Hands Hospice of Cherokee Village and the angels who cared for her these past few months.

Services were this past Wednesday at Hardy Methodist Church followed by a horse drawn procession to Hardy Cemetery for interment.

The family requests that memorials in lieu of flowers be sent to New Beginnings Pregnancy Help Center, PO Box 506, Ash Flat, AR 72513.
