Albert W. "Al" Perkins born to V.F. and Elizabeth McMurtry Perkins on Feb 5, 1928 in Cotton Plant, Ark., passed away on Friday, April 1, 2011. After graduation from high school in l946, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and began his first tour of duty in the Pacific on the island of Guam. At the outbreak of the Korean crisis in 1950, he was recalled to active duty and stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. where he earned the rank of Sergeant, United States Air Force.

Al began his career in the institutional food business when he joined Continental Baking Co. (Wonder Bread/Hostess Cakes) in Little Rock in l953. In 1955, that job took him to Searcy, Ark. where he was general manager of the Wonder Bread depot and distribution operation through 1963. In 1964, he and his family returned to Little Rock when he joined Vogel's Frozen/Institutional Foods. Starting as a salesman, Al later became a district manager, general sales manager, and upon Mr. Sam M. Vogel's retirement in l977, he became general manager of Vogel's, which by then, had become Vogel's Division of Borden Foods. During his tenure as GM of Vogel's, Al also served on the board of directors of Atlanta based Frosty Acres Brands, a private label line of frozen foods that supplied Vogel's and approximately 70 other Frosty Acres distributors nation wide. Locally, Al was also active and a long time member of the Little Rock Sales Marketing Executives Association.

Upon his retirement, and due to his life long interest in the American automobile, he founded Al's Dealer Trade Service where he delivered cars for many central Arkansas auto dealers, specifically Bale Honda of Little Rock. Among his other interests were the many years that he enjoyed as an avid motorcycle enthusiast. From his first Harley Davidson as a teenager to his last Honda Interstate at age 62, he rode many many miles.

Al was predeceased by the love of his life, JoAnn Moore Perkins, his brother V.F. "Perk" Perkins Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., and his grandson, Marcus F. Perkins of Little Rock. He is survived by his son David F. Perkins of Little Rock, son Donald Perkins of Irving, Texas, grandaughter Lauren Perkins of Fayetteville, and grandaughter Sydney Perkins of Dallas, Texas. Loving husband, great provider, father, grandfather and friend to many, he will be greatly missed and always remembered as a loyal friend.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aprl 6 at Cotton Plant Cemetary in Cotton Plant, Ark. and officiated by Brother David Moore of Asbury United Methodist Church of Little Rock.
