Ft. Smith, Jan. 3.- Garland Shepherd, 30, a bridge workman from Garfield, Ark., in the employ of the Frisco railroad, died in the hospital here Tuesday night at eight o'clock, the result of injuries received at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon near Poteau when the bridge piling he and J.M. Keyser were unloading broke the standards on the side of the railroad car and rolled to the ground, carrying the two men along. Keyser, whose home is in Paris, Tex., sustained a broken leg and internal injuries but is expected to recover. Supt. C.H. Baltzell of the Central division of the Frisco, started an investigation to fix the blame for the accident. Information we had early Tuesday night was to the effect that the two men were on top of a load of piling which was being unloaded on the banks of the Poteau river a mile north of the city of the same name when the standards gave way. The entire load was rolled to the ground with the men mixed in with the mass. Several other workmen who were standing nearby were uninjured. A special train, composed of the engine and caboose of the work-train, was immediately made up and the men were rushed to Ft. Smith to Sparks Memorial hospital. Shepherd's body will probably be shipped to Garfield, Ark. where his wife lives. ***** The deceased was a son of E.W. Shepherd of Central and a fine young man.
