MELBOURNE – Ophelia Broxson Smith, 78, of Melbourne died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in a Batesville hospital.
Born July 30, 1925, in Deweyville, Texas, she was the daughter of Joseph and Caledonia Hennigan Broxson. She was a registered nurse, serving in the Peace Corps and working in many local hospitals, including Stone County Medical Center. She was a member of the Mount Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Retired Nurses Association and Retired Officers’ Wives Association.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Emerson Walls Jr. and Sand Douglas Smith, both of North Little Rock; three daughters, Anita Pitts of Kansas, Mary Beth Jeffery of Mount Olive and Tandra Susan Jones of Wooster; a sister, Ora Thelma Sevier of Brady, Texas; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Donald Emerson Walls; her second husband, Col. Thomas Tedford Smith; three sisters, Ollie Watson, Opal Stretcher and Ovie Hughes; two brothers, James Broxson and Ed Broxson; a son, Storm Mitchell Smith; and a granddaughter.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Jeff Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Patterson, Donnie Walls, Jason Jones, Cameron Jeffery, Garrett Sullins and Brent Sullins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lauren Sullins and Lisa Moore.
