Born on April 24, 1922 in King Township of Johnson County, Arkansas, Lee Mervin Newton was the only son, and the third child of Jesse Lee and Eva Underwood Newton. Lee Mervin's two older sisters survived him in death. His paternal grandparents were William Thomas and Clemma J. King Newton. His maternal grandparents were George W. and Mollie Underwood.

Enlisting to serve in the United States Military during World War II, Lee served as an American Merchant Marine until his release on August 15, 1945.

For his life's work, Lee's occupation was carpentry. He also married his sweetheart, Anna Beth Baskin. She was the daughter of Robert Thurlow and Estell McMillan Baskin. Lee and Anna Beth had two boys and one girl from their marriage untion. At the time of his death he had seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lee and Beth had the distinction of being original charter members of the Stillwell Bible Baptist Church. They were ardent workers in that church throughout their lives.

On January 20, 2003, Lee passed away at the Clarksville Convalescent Home. His funeral was held at his beloved Stillwell Bible Baptist Church. Services were conducted by the Rev. James Goodman. Lee was then laid to rest in the Stillwell Cemetery with full military honors.
