MOHNEY, Jas. E. - Jas. E. Mohney died Tuesday morning about eleven o'clock at his home three miles southwest of Rogers. Death was caused by pneumonia and came as a decided shock to the entire community, the greater portion of whom did not know that he had been ill. He was taken ill a week ago last Saturday but it was not until Thursday that his condition was considered serious. From that time he continued to decline and by Sunday it was realized that his chances for recovery were slight. Funeral services were held at the residence yesterday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by Rev. W.R. Nelson and Rev. J.P. Dillon. Despite the bad weather a large number of friends were present from town while a delegation of fellow Woodmen and business men met the funeral party at the cemetery. Few men who have lived in Rogers for so comparatively a short period as did Mr. Mohney have been more popular or more thoroughly respected. He came to Rogers in the spring of 1906 and that summer bought the Racket and Ten-Cent Store, which he sold a year ago last fall to engage in the contracting business. He built the Freeman-Cowan business block and Miss Buck's residence but later in the spring bought the Jim Morgan farm where he was living at the time of his death. The house was entirely remodeled the past fall and he was just getting the farm in fine shape. Mr. Mohney was not a member of any church but was a Christian in every sense of the word. He was secretary of the Building Committee of the M.E. church and in charge of the purchase of materials for that handsome edifice. His untiring and intelligent work there made him many firm friends in the congregation of that church and no person who had business dealings of any kind with him failed to feel that he always made their interests his interests also. It means much when an entire community can say "He was an honest man; a good citizen, a true neighbor, a kind father and a faithful husband." Mr. Mohney was an active worker in Modern Woodmen circles and organized the order here, the first in the state. He was one of the state organizers and did much to push the order in this section. J.E. Mohney was born in Green County, Wis. December 25, 1854. When twelve years old his parents moved to Harrisonville, Mo. where he grew to manhood and where he was married September 15, 1878 to Miss Addie Hyde who survives him. To them were born two children, Mrs. Lena Andis of Pittsburg, Kansas and Jay Mohney of Rogers. After his marriage Mr. Mohney moved to Clinton, Mo. where they lived for 20 years. At an early age he taught school; later he learned and worked at the carpenter trade. For thirteen years he was millwright in one of the Clinton mills. In 1903 he moved to a farm near Paola, Kan., coming to Rogers three years later. The Democrat joins with the entire community in extending its deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
