GILBERT, Harris McCager - H.M. Gilbert, one of Benton county's pioneers and well known throughout Benton county, died at his home at Decatur on Friday, January 23rd, 1925 at the age of 73 years. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Finch at the Cottage Grove church Saturday and interment was made in the Word cemetery. He was the son of Harris Gilbert, who emigrated from Tennessee to Arkansas several years before the Civil War and located at Bentonville where he followed the trade of blacksmith. This was at the time when Bentonville was a log cabin village. On October 5th, 1855 the oldest son, Harris McCager Gilbert, was born, who lived practically all his life in Benton county, except two years spent in Missouri during the Civil War. He was married to Alice Cherry on May 1st, 1871. After spending a couple of years near Caverna mill they located on a farm near Decatur, where they have lived for over 50 years. His main occupation was that of farmer and he lived an active, useful life up to the time of his last illness which occurred three weeks before his death. Mr. Gilbert lived a devoted Christian life for a number of years. He was a friend to everybody, a loyal citizen, and one who held the respect of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, not only by his family, to whom he was greatly devoted, but by his church and community in general. He is survived by a wife and five children, a brother and three sisters, besides a number of other relatives to mourn their loss. We extend our most heartfelt sympathy, though their loss has been Heaven's gain.
