Rev. James Elvin McDill, Sr., 80, of Hamburg died Thursday, December 8, 2011, at his residence outside of Hamburg. A native of Alabama, a former resident of Greensburg, LA, who lived in Ashley County for the past 26 years, he was a minister, retired truck driver, and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Snyder. Rev. McDill pastored several churches in South Arkansas, was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on lawnmowers and loved to play his guitar.
He was survived by his wife of eight years, Dorothy Wilson McDill; four sons, Rev. James Elvin McDill, Jr., and wife Nancy, Stanley Dale McDill and Joseph McDill and wife Mary Ann of Hamburg and Rev. Paul Edward McDill and wife Jeanne of Monroe, LA; three brothers, Kenneth McDill of Hamburg, Dean McDill and wife Nancy of Columbus, MS, and Franklin McDill and wife Shirly of Louisville, MS; two sisters, Lucille Carter and husband Hank of Columbus and Rubie Black of Ackerman, MS; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Rosa Florence Allen-McDill; a daughter, Shirley Marie McDill; a grandson, Dean White; a great-granddaughter, Kristen Tate; his parents, Walter and Beatrice McDill; four brothersm Leon, Ralph, Raymond and David McDill and three sisters, Margie, Betty, and Kate McDill.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Snyder with Bros. Paul Payne and Elvin McDill, Jr., officiating. Pallbearers were Curtis "Elmo" McDill, Zack Duncan, Daniel Rice, Lynn Oliver, Shane Cope, Alex "Bubba" Lincoln, Ricky Burns and Mike White. Burial followed in the Mount Zion Cemetery with arrangements by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
