John M. Knight, aged 62, veteran river and weather observer for Camden, died in the Camden Hospital at 10:30 a.m. Saturday after a long illness. Mr. Knight lived at Sandy Beach on the banks of the Ouachita River and was a member of a pioneer family here. He was an authority on the Ouachita River and could forecast floods and river stages accurately. Site of his home was at the entrance to the old ferry boat that plied the Ouachita connecting Camden with all points north until the old Martin free bridge was built around 1910. Mr. Knight had helped rescue many persons caught in the treacherous Ouachita River at the Sandy Beach swimming spot, and he also had helped recover bodies of drowning victims. He had been official U. S. weather observer and reporter here for many years, and supplied the Camden News with its daily weather and temperature readings along with the daily stage of the Ouachita River. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. R. D. Biggers of Camden, and Mrs. A. L. Belot of Shreveport, La.; and one son, John W. Knight of Camden. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Proctor Chapel b y the Rev. T. L. Harris. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with Proctor mortuary in charge. (Camden News - June 5, 1948)
