Walter Knight, aged Ouachita county retired farmer, and well known as a Ouachita river settler, was found hanged in a wooded area between Hilltop Acres and the river Saturday morning. His body was discovered by some bird hunters. Mr. Knight had been reported missing Friday night, according to reports. He and his wife had just recently moved to Hilltop Acres. They sold their farm up on the Ouachita river several months ago. A. D. Mason who is manager of Hilltop Acres said that the Knights had asked him some months ago for an apartment in the Senior Citizens unit there, which is on ground level. The Knights did not want to have to climb stairs because of their age. As soon as one unit became vacant the Knights rented it. Mr. Mason said he saw Mr. Knight just a few days ago and he seemed happy and contented. Coroner George Mathis was called along with police and county sheriff's department. An investigation was underway. The Knights were among the best known family that was noted for connection with the Ouachita river. He had lived on the river most all of his life and at one time lived in the old Knight home at Sandy Beach. Later he built his home on the river and farmed the area which was known far and wide as the Knight farm. Knight's Landing is near the farm and this is a favorite recreation spot on the river for South Arkansas people. It was reported that Mr. Knight was last seen about 9 p.m. Friday night. Searching parties had been called out to hunt for him. He was found by the hunters about 9:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Proctor's Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. (Camden News - December 4, 1960)
