August 14, 1925 - Aged Citizen Dead
Mr. Elem Cockerham, one of Izard County's pioneers, died last Friday night at his home near Boswell station, having succumbed to a stroke of apoplexy.
Mr. Cockerham was born in Alabama in 1849. At the age of 21, he came to Arkansas. In 1879, he was married to Miss Susan Godwin of this county, to which union a number of children were born, eight of whom are now living. They are Frank J. Cockerham of Jumbo, AR, Clarence Cockerham of Cook, Ar, Eulous L. Cockerham of Memphis, TN, Mrs. R.B. Freeman and Mrs. T.H. Freeman of Buffalo, AR., Mrs. L. T. Tull of Bryant, AR, Theo. Cockerham of Chattanooga, TN, and Mrs. T.O. Cheney of Cook.
Besided the children named, deceased is survived by his aged companion, Mrs. Susan Cockerham.
At the age of 26, Mr. Cockerham was converted and joined the Methodist Church, in which he was a faithful member for 50 years. In 1878, he was made a member of the Masonic Lodge at LaCrosse and later became a Member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
Mr. Cockerham was a true repersentative of that generation which endured the hardships of the time in order that a better country and community might be handed down to the raising generation. The principles of honesty, truthfulness, and love for his fellow man was strictly adhered to by him. He was held in the highest esteem of all.
Funeral services were held at the Vest Cemetery Saturday afternoon, Aug 8, in the presence of a large number of firends and relatives, by Rev. R.S. Hayden of this place.
Note: Arkansas Death Record Index has his name spelled Elam R Cockerhorn. His name could be Elam Rufus Cockerham, Her name possibly Susan Francis Cockerham.
