Mildred Starnes Childs, 83, of Monticello, died Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Living Center at Little Rock.
She was born May 24, 1921, at Walnut Ridge (Lawrence County), a daughter of the late Harrison Benjamin Starnes Sr. and Vera Cutsinger Starnes.
She received her education in the Walnut Ridge public school system.
She received a degree in home economics from the University of Arkansas and a degree in education from Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello).
She taught 6th-grade reading in the Warren public school system for 14 years and was a home economist for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, working in Hot Spring, Saline, Bradley and Drew counties for 27 years. She retired in 1987.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church at Monticello.
She was a lifetime member of the Warren Junior Auxiliary and a member of the PEO, the Monticello Lions Club and Friends of the Library at Monticello.
She was a lifetime and longtime board member of the Arkansas 4-H Alumni Association, a member of Alpha Iota Epsilon Sigma Pi and the Drew County Chamber of Commerce.
She received the National Association of Extension Home Economists' Distinguished Service award and the 4-H Alumni Recognition award, along with many other awards. She was named the Monticello Arkansas Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club "Woman of the Year" in 1980.
She was preceded in death on Sept. 6, 1970, by her husband, James L. Childs, whom she married on Dec. 7, 1946.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Childs of Little Rock; and one brother, H.B. Starnes of Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at Warren by Frazer's Funeral Home at Warren.
