Sept. 21, 1853, the son of Thomas S. and Mary McGaugh. In 1869 he moved with his parents to this state, settling on a farm near Hico, later moving to near Springtown. As a young man he started in the mercantile business at Springtown and in 1894, when the town of Gentry was started, he formed a partnership with J.F. and A.G. Wasson and opened up the first store in the new town, taking an active part in establishing the town. On account of failing health he retired from business and moved to Siloam Springs. In 1888 he was married to Miss Callie Wilson who passed away a few years later. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Jessie Saddler, Raton, N.M. and Mrs. Callie Byers of Denver, Colo. On Oct. 21, 1894 he married Miss Margaret L. McKinney. To this union one child was born, Mrs. Emma McArthur of Siloam Springs. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, having been made a Master Mason at Springtown Lodge No. 222, now Gentry Lodge, in which he retained his membership. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South of Siloam Springs. Mr. McGaugh spent an active life in business, being a man of superior business judgement and very successful. Although advanced in years Mr. McGaugh retained the spirit of youth, always enjoying the association of young people and anxious at all times to help anyone who needed assistance. During the many years of his life he acted as counselor and advisor to the people of this community, patient and considerate of mistakes in others, although free from them himself, always trying to build people up and inspire them to nobler living. It can truly be said that he was a good Christian man and citizen.

Robert J. McGaugh, aged 73 years, the best known man in the southwestern part of Benton county, died suddenly at his home in Siloam Springs about five o'clock Wednesday morning. He had been in apparently good health until 11 o'clock Tuesday night when he was taken critically ill and from which he never recovered. Bob McGaugh has been a resident of Benton county since 1869 but was born in Gallatin, Mo. in 1854. He first located at the old town of Hico that later became Siloam Springs. A few years afterwards he moved to Springtown where he opened a general merchandise store, taking his brother in as a partner. Frank Wasson, a short time afterwards, bought an interest. When the K.C. Southern built into Gentry the store was moved to the new town; Buck Wasson became a member of the firm, the other two men retiring. The name of Wasson, McGaugh & Co. became widely known and they built up a big business. On account of ill health of Mr. McGaugh the store was sold about five years ago. He has since made his home in Siloam Springs. Mr. McGaugh was twice married, his first wife being Miss Caledonia Wilson. After her death he later wedded Miss Mabel McKinney in 1895 who survives.
