BLACK, Sophia A. GREENWOOD - Mrs. John Black died Saturday at her home at Bentonville at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 23 days. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday. Mrs. Black had lived at Bentonville for many years and was the widow of Uncle John Black, one of the best known politicians of the county.

Dice Alderson, wife and son have been in Bentonville this week to attend the funeral of Mrs. John Black. Mrs. Black was a relative of Mrs. Alderson.

Died March 25th, 1911 at her residence in Bentonville, Ark., Sophia A. Black, in the seventy-fourth year of her age. The deceased was born in Atlanta, Georgia April 2nd, 1837. She came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Greenwood, when two years of age, to Bentonville, Ark., which from that date had been her only home. July 10th, 1855 she was married to John Black, of precious memory to so many of our oldest citizens. To this union were born six children, three sons, A.G., S.A. and H.D. Black, and three daughters, Miss Kittie M. Black, Mrs. Mary L. Tinnin and Mrs. Carrie Crouch, all of whom were present at the funeral service, held at the residence by the writer, assisted by Rev. W.S. Baker, who for several years had been her pastor. Soon after her marriage she united with the C.P. Church, in which she lived and humbly and earnestly labored until the union of the C.P. and the mother church, when she went with the church into the union. Sister Black, though firm and unshaken in her convictions, was humble and conciliatory in her disposition and conduct. She had known personally what it was to have plenty and also to be poor in this world's goods; what it was to be afflicted in body and overwhelmed with sorrow; and she knew also the true source of refuge and comfort under these conditions. Her trust was in the blessed Christ. The interests which lay nearest her heart were the church and her home. In heart and hand she was ready to do what she could for the church and no sacrifice was too great for her if it was for the welfare of her children and children's children. The church will miss her; the afflicted and sorrowing, whom she visited and to whom she extended tender sympathy and a helping hand, will miss her. The home, the community and the church all will suffer loss by her death, but she, we are persuaded, has entered into that which is a far better world. A great concourse of friends and neighbors attended the funeral service and many beautiful floral offerings were lovingly placed upon the mound that marks the resting place of her precious dust, in the City Cemetery. Peace to her ashes, and grace, mercy and peace from our Heavenly Father to the broken hearts in the sorrowing home. P. Carnahan.
