ATKISSON, Almyra DEASON - (from Walnut Hill} On Wednesday night after Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Atkisson had retired for the night, somewhere near 10 o'clock, Aunt Myra, as we all loved to call her, awoke Uncle Jim saying someone was wanting him on the phone. It proved to be J.W. Stroud of Rogers and when Uncle Jim came back in the room Aunt Myra said "I can't breathe," so a doctor was hastily called but before one could reach her she quietly passed away. Almyra Atkisson, nee Deason, was born November 1, 1856 one mile east of Rogers on Prairie Creek and spent her entire life in Benton county. She was married to J.L. Atkisson April 6, 1897. She professed a hope in Christ in 1875 at what was known as the Droke school house, at a revival meeting. She never united with any church but lived a faithful Christian life and was a loving companion and mother to his orphan children. She was a member of one of the pioneer families of Benton county, being a descendant of the Deasons and Sikes. Her passing breaks up a home that will be missed as much or more than any in Garfield township. She had lived in Walnut Hill, Providence and Garfield districts and her presence in the sick rooms and needy places in her neighborhood was well known and is still remembered. No one of our acquaintance has made more personal sacrifices to cheer sad homes and relieve suffering. She was always preparing some dainty dish to tempt the fevered appetite, or to turn a scorching pillow into a cool place of rest. She was a willing worker in all enterprises in our community to make it a better place in which to live. It is said that we become a part of all we meet and we know that our communities have been made better by her having lived among us. The only members of the Atkisson family present were Mrs. Jim Dye, Mrs. H.D. Snodderly of Garfield and Mrs. Sid Murphy of Springfield, Mo. A large number of relatives and friends, among them her only living uncle, J. Wade Sikes of Rogers, attended the funeral services held at the cemetery south of Avoca near the Bill Allred farm. Services were held by George Williams and Elder John Taylor. - Written by request by Mr. and Mrs. George Williams.
