DUCKWORTH, A.J. A.J. Duckworth died at his home in Rogers in the southwest part of town Thursday afternoon of last week at three o'clock. He had been very low all day and although it was known his condition was serious, still his death came as a great shock to the relatives and to the friends all over this part of the county, most of whom had not even learned of his illness. He was taken ill Monday morning with congestive chills and the physicians feared for the worst from the start. Later his heart became affected and this was the immediate cause of his death. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon at half past two and were conducted by Rev. J.P. Dillon of the Christian church and Rev. McAtee, pastor of the Baptist church. The funeral was under the auspices of the local orders of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias, to which the deceased brother had belonged for many years. It was perhaps the largest funeral ever held in Rogers on a week day and the church was unable to accommodate the many who seized this opportunity to show by their presence their respect to the memory of the departed brother and fellow citizen. The lodges marched to the residence and accompanied the body to the church and then accompanied it to its final resting place in the city cemetery. By the death of Mr. Duckworth Rogers lost one of its best known and enterprising business men; one who had earned the confidence and respect of the entire community by his unfailing integrity and his long years of square dealing with our people. For seventeen years he had been in business here, chiefly in the grocery line, and he only retired from that business about a year ago. He owned the Duckworth addition in the southwest part of town and had considerable experience in the real estate business here. For several terms he had served as city treasurer and only retired because he said he was tired of the job. Upon his return from California the latter part of the summer he planned to enter the wholesale fruit business and the Ozark Fruit Company, composed of himself and F.I. Gleason, was the result. The new company had just completed a new brick warehouse and office here and only Saturday before his death Mr. Duckworth accompanied the Democrat editor on a tour of inspection through the new quarters of which he was pardonably proud. At the same time he had announced his intention of commencing a handsome new home the first of the coming year. Mr. Duckworth had been married only a little over six months and his untimely death is a crushing sorrow to the young wife. The marriage of Mr. Duckworth and Miss Clara Bowen of this city on June 5th at So. McAlester, Okla. came as a great surprise to the Rogers friends who were fearing "Jack" was becoming a confirmed bachelor. The newly wedded couple left at once for Oregon and California where they spent several months on a honeymoon. Mr. Duckworth was born in Benton county March 25th, 1864 He has lived in this section all his life. His father, J.P. Duckworth, was one of the early settlers. He is survived by 4 brothers and 1 sister, as follows: J.W. Duckworth, Tahlequah, Okla.; Mrs. M.F. Vernon, Lake View, Oregon; G.A. Duckworth, Daisy, Washington; G.W. Duckworth, Rogers and D.A. Duckworth, Lake View, Oregon, The Democrat joins with the entire community in extending sympathy to the bereaved widow and relatives.
