DUCKWORTH, J.P., Sr. - J.P. Duckworth, Sr., probably the oldest man in Rogers, died Monday night at nine o'clock at his home on South Fourth street at the age of eighty-six years, six months and seventeen days. Mr. Duckworth had been in feeble health all spring and several times it was thought he could live only a few hours but he had remarkable vitality and surprised the doctors and friends by pulling through. For some time, however, he had been steadily slipping away and his death was not unexpected. Uncle Tom McCarter, who lives three miles southwest of Rogers with a son, was in town Monday and spent most of the day with Mr. Duckworth. Mr. McCarter was 87 years old in January but is still well preserved for a man of his age. Mr. Duckworth was born December 17, 1819 in St. Francis county, Mo. He came to Benton county sixty-six years ago and has since taken a prominent part in the upbuilding of this section. In 1846 he married Miss Nancy Alexander and to them were born nine children, six of whom are living: A.J. and G.W. Duckworth of Rogers; G.A. Duckworth of Bentonville; J.P. Duckworth and Mrs. Mollie Vernon of Lakeview, Oregon; J.W. Duckworth of Tahlequah, I.T. Mrs. Duckworth died some five years ago. Funeral services were held at the residence on South Fourth street at two o'clock yesterday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Jordan of the Baptist church. Interment was at Dodson's graveyard, four miles west of Rogers. The deceased has always been known as one of the best men of the community and even though it had been a number of years since he had taken an active part in local matters he never lost his interest. He was a life long democrat and never missed casting his vote if the weather permitted him to come down town. He was a member of the Baptist church and all his life held to the tenets of that faith.
