Verlyn Scroggins, 17, of Cherry Valley, passed away on April 24, 1964, a Memphis Hospital that night.
He was the son of Mr and Mrs. Monroe Scroggins of Cherry Valley, AR. Verlyn was injured in a car-truck collision on a curve 4 miles south of Jonesboro on Highway 1. He and 5 other students were in a car headed to the Poinsett County track meet held at Arkansas State College in Jonesboro. His fellow team mate, David Clem of Harrisburg, also passed away as a result of this accident. One other young man, Wayne King, of Harrisburg, was seriously injured.
Verlyn is greatly missed by his fellow team mates and classmates of Harrisburg High School.
