*Obituary Chester W. Thomas, 74, of the Hutchinson Mountain Community died Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at the White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was born May 5, 1932 in the Oak Grove Community on Hutchinson Mountain to Chester R. Thomas and Elva Ann (Brancecum) Thomas.He was a teacher, served in the Navy during the Korean War and was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church.
He graduated from Floral High School, received his undergraduate degree from Arkansas College, and a master's degree from Arkansas State University at Jonesboro. He was a math teacher at Searcy Junior High School for the last 17 years of his 30 year career, and retired in 1987. He enjoyed gardening and hunting, but his favorite thing was working the cattle on his family's farm, which has been in the Thomas family since 1859. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred (Wilcox) Thomas of Hutchinson Mountain; one son, Michael L. Thomas and his wife Elaine (Barnes) Thomas of Hutchinson Mountain; one grandchild, Airman Christopher Michael Thomas of Hutchinson Mountain, who is currently serving aboard the USS Stennis aircraft carrier which is operating in the Persian Gulf; and one brother, James L. Thomas of Armorel, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Marilyn Sue Thomas and Catherine Ann Thomas; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Thomas; and one sister, Arvie Nell Thomas.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Roller-Crouch Chapel in Batesville officiated by Steve Long and W. T. Rider. Interment will be at Palestine Cemetery in the Hutchinson Mountain Community by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the Old Independence Regional Museum, P.O. Box 4506, Batesville, AR 72503 and the American Cancer Society, Mid-South Division, 901 N. University Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72207.
