MARSHALL DOUGLAS’ FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY AFTERNOON

Funeral services for Marshall Douglas, aged 55, widely known former Bentonville resident and Northwest Arkansas business man; who died unexpectedly at his home in Muskogee, Okla., at 8:30 o’clock Sunday evening, May 17th, 1936, were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Highfill, this county at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. Abner Sage, pastor of the Bentonville M.E Church, South, assisted by the Rev Poe Williams, pastor of the Highfill and Springtown churches of that denomination. Music was by a quartet from the Bentonville church composed of Mesdames Arch Wright and F.M. Brock and Dr. R. O. Pickens and Buell B. Spencer, and Mrs. Florence Gladden, accompanist.

Pallbearers were nephew and cousins of Mr. Douglas and included Fred Douglas and Brice Douglas of Bentonville; Fred and Clark Douglas of Springfield, Mo.; and Barney and Frank Douglas of Highfill. Interment was in the Douglas cemetery near Highfill.

A number of Muskogee friends came to Highfill for the funeral.

Mrs. Douglas’ sudden death resulted from injuries received in a traffic accident at Muskogee a week earlier when he was struck by a taxi as he was crossing a street and suffered a badly broken leg and severe bruises and other hurts. His condition, however, was not considered at all critical, and when his younger son, who had came to see him from Gladewater, Texas, left his bedside rather late Sunday afternoon, Mr. Douglas appeared in good health aside from the accident injuries. His death occurred suddenly only a few hours later.

Edward Marshall Douglas was the youngest son of T.H. and Emily Morrison Douglas, pioneers of Northwest Arkansas and Benton County. HE was born on the family homestead about 16 miles southwest of Bentonville, near what is now the village of Highfill. On March 30th, 1907, he married Miss Jett Wyman, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Wyman of the Morning Star community, near Bentonville, Mrs. Douglas and their two sons, Bill Douglas of Muskogee, Okla., and Vol Douglas of Gladewater, Texas, survived him.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, a number of years ago and was a member of the St. Paul’s Methodist Church at Muskogee at the time of his death, his death, he dad been a Mason for many years and a member of a number of branches of the Masonic Order.

Mr. Douglas came to Bentonville in 1905 and became associated with the Benton County Hardware Company here. He was connected with the Bentonville store for a number of years and then was made manager of that firm’s Siloam Springs store. From there he was transferred after a year or so to the managership of the Fayetteville, Ark., store and later became assistant manger of the Benton County Hardware Company’s wholesale branch at Muskogee.

Several years ago he severed his connection with that company and became associated in the insurance business at Muskogee with Chas. Renner of Fayetteville. Since disposing of his interest in that business a few years ago he has been employed in various capacities by the State of Oklahoma and was with the revenue department when the end came.

Beside his wife and sons, Mr. Douglas is survived by two brothers, Marion Douglas of Bentonville and Morrison Douglas of the Highfill community, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Mitchell of Gentry, this county, and a number of other relatives, including among his nephews Fred Douglas of Bentonville, former circuit clerk for Benton Count, and Bruce Douglas of Fayetteville, who is deputy Benton County tax collector.
