Phonsee Inez Kirtley, 96, of Conway, formerly of Jacksonville, Arkansas, died Friday, November 21, 2008. She was born September 20, 1912 in Griffithville, Arkansas, a daughter of the late John D. and Eva (Price) Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam M. Kirtley; as well as nine brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Kirtley was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Arkansas; and had served as Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer. She loved to travel, and had been to Mexico, California, Maine and had visited Alcatraz.
She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and cooking, and as remembered by her children, could make a meal out of nothing. She lived in the Towers in Jacksonville for 25 years and served as captain of the floor. She also gardened in the community garden at the Towers.
Survivors are her children, Laura D. Uhrich of Jacksonville; Mary J. Kirtley, Sharon S. Kirtley and Dale L. Kirtley and wife, Diane, all of Conway; six grandchildren who she helped raise, Donna Lambert, Cliff Uhrich, Jeannette Wilson, Michael Kirtley, Laura Dyer, Merak Dyer; eight great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild on the way; sisters, Vera Brennan, Margaret Jeans, Omega Johnson; brothers, Calvert and James Johnson; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be Monday, November 24, 2008 at the funeral home, from 2 – 4 p.m. Funeral will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday in the chapel of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home with Bro. Ben Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Perry County, under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway. 501-327-7727.
