Samuel Jackson James

16 May 1858 in Lynchburg, Franklin Co, Tennessee
6 Jan 1936 in McCrory, Woodruff Co, Arkansas

Samuel was the son of Riley James (1819-1905) and Sarah NEWMAN (1832-1905)
He married Minerva Jane LASTER (1860-1948) on 25 Dec 1879 in Rives, Obion Co., Tennessee.

Together, Samuel and Jane had seven children:
Arthur (1881- )
Lucy Pearl (1883-1959)
Horace Jackson (1888-1947)
Iris Corder 'Babe' (1889-1960)
Jessie Lee (1894-1974)
Bessie Bee (1896-1932)
Mae Elizabeth James (1901-1978)

Samuel lived in Tennessee during the early part of his life moving from Franklin County to Obion County sometime about 1872 to 1873 where he met and married Minerva Jane LASTER. They moved to Arkansas sometime between 1900 and 1910 where Samuel worked in the logging and timber business. We have pictures of Samuel working at sawmills and hauling huge trees to the sawmill. One of Samuel's favorite pastimes was hunting.

Samuel left Lynchburg, TN when he was a young man because of a shooting death. Samuel is supposed to have killed a man, but he did it in defense of a woman the man was harassing and he didn't mean to kill the man. Samuel was tried and acquitted of murder, but even being found innocent did not save him from the wrath from the family of the man that was killed. Samuel was warned and it was suggested that he leave Franklin County which is when he went to Obion County, TN. We have not been able to find the court file for his trial, but we did find a warrant issued for his arrest for "carrying a pistol" which I believe was from 1872.

Samuel Jackson James was my great grandfather - I am descended from his daughter, Jessie Lee JAMES, and her husband, Robert Benjamin Linn.
