LEGGITT, Joseph - Last Sunday about one o'clock at his home in Gentry, our well known citizen, Joseph Leggitt, passed away. He was 77 years, one month and 14 days old. He had been afflicted for some time and his death was not entirely unexpected. He was a good neighbor, a quiet, unassuming Christian gentleman, who seemed to have a kind word for everyone. Few, doubtless, are better prepared for the last great summons than Brother Leggitt. Mr. Leggitt was born in Ohio, in Butler county, March 23, 1839. His family moved to Indiana in his childhood. He joined the Union army at Indianapolis Jan. 7, 1862, being in Co. K, 54th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He lived in Missouri awhile after the war, then in Colorado for thirty years. There his sister kept house for him, dying in his home there. He came to Arkansas in 1908; he was first married that year, his wife living only a week. He was married to Mrs. Betty Ninemire, July 20, 1909, who survives him. He leaves also a brother, living in Indianapolis. Mr. Leggitt joined the Congregational church in Oct. 1912 and was a faithful member of the church and a consistent Christian. He was a man without a known enemy, one whom it did you good to meet; he will not soon be forgotten by his many friends and acquaintances here and elsewhere. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church here, conducted by the pastor, Rev. L.A. Turner. He was laid to rest in the Gentry cemetery. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved wife and the other relatives.
