Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, August 25, 1950:

5 Year-Old Boy Dies in Accident Near Here Friday

Five year-old Jimmie Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Stevens was killed instantly Friday afternoon, August 18, about 5:30, when he fell beneath the rear wheels of a heavily loaded lumber truck. The accident happened in front of the Stevens home and store on Highway 5, about a mile northwest of Calico Rock. The truck was driven by Walter Walker, formerly of this place, but for the past few years a resident of Gainesville, Mo.

According to accounts of those who witnessed the tragic event, the state highway grader, en route to town had stopped across the road from the store while Mr. Stevens was serving the driver, C. J. Harber, with a cold drink. Jimmie and his younger brother had accompanied their father to the grader. As the grader was moving away, Jimmie was making his way back across the road to the store and ran into the side of the lumber truck and fell under the left wheel, with the result that his head and body were badly crushed and mangled. Apparently, due to the noise of the running grader the child did not hear the approaching truck. The driver did not see the boy until after the accident. Following an investigation of the accident, conducted by Justice of the Peace W. K. Forrest, Walker was absolved of any blame in connection with the tragedy.

Besides his parents the victim is survived by three brothers, John, Berry and Donald, and two sisters, all of the home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berry and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Killian Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Luther K. Wilson, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Rose Lawn Cemetery, with Roller-Barber Funeral Service in charge.
