Byron Lee Cravens, 91, of Magazine died Monday, Nov 7, 2005, in Booneville. He was born Oct. 3, 1914, on the west end of Mount Magazine, the son of A S & Mattie Gantt Cravens. Mr Cravens began his career raising crops of cotton, potatoes, & corn. He had a dairy cattle operation in the 1930s into the mid-1940s. He transitioned to raising cattle, hauling, & trading in the 1940s. For many years he attended a cattle auction every weekday in Fort Smith, Conway, Mount Ida, Ola, County Line, Waldron or Ozark. Mr. Cravens was a member of the Logan County Farm Bureau & Cattlemen’s Association. He was a board member of the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service for 37 years & a Magazine School Board member for over 10 years.
He married Thelma Reba Martin on Oct 30, 1932. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct 30, 1992. She died March 4, 1997.
In 1962, Byron & Thelma were named South Logan County Farm Family of the Year. Together they were 4-H leaders for over 17 years. They were active in the Magazine Methodist Church & he was a trustee during the building programs. A son, Donald Gene, preceded him in death in 1973. He is also preceded in death by five sisters, Ola Loyd, Mamie Coffman, Minnell Brewster, Willie Rogers, & Faye Newsom; & two brothers, Barclay & Ray. Surviving are two sons, Damon Lee & wife, Roberta, & Danny Martin, all of Magazine; one granddaughter, Danya Elise Davenport of Booneville; one grandson, Darrel W of Chicago. Pallbearers: Melburn Brewster, Edwin Coffman, David Cravens, Mike Loyd, Bob Newsom & Joe Newsom. Honorary pallbearers: Bud Loyd, Gerald Loyd, Bill Newsom, Jack Newsom, Bill Rogers, Harold Rogers & Tim Rogers.
