Son of Benjamin and Mary Howard.
Married Mary Louise Hannum Aug 19 1855 in Jamestown, Grant Co., WI.
He enlisted in the Confederate Army Mar 11 1862 in what later became Company E, 27th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, also know as Shaler's Regiment. He was detailed as Q.M. Clerk Jun 18 1862. Family tradition says that he was captured while home on leave, held in prison in Springfield, MO and then released at the behest of Northern friends.
